MaP Award
The MaP Doctoral School awards a prize for the most promising doctoral thesis of ETH Zurich in the field of Materials and Processes of the preceding year. Each MaP member group is invited to nominate one candidate.
Nominations are evaluated based on the submitted written contributions. A jury of experts from academia and industry assesses the entries and selects the nominees for the shortlist according to the following criteria:
- scientific quality and novelty of the work in the area of materials and processes
- demonstration of the ability to follow a translational approach to address a scientific grand challenge (need-/end-use-driven research)
- transdisciplinary thinking (research strategy crossing disciplinary boundaries, impact of research on other scientific disciplines)
- report and dissemination
All criteria are weighted equally.
Each jury member conducts an independent evaluation and submits their assessment to the MaP Doctoral School Coordinator, who compiles the results. The jury then meets to discuss the consolidated assessment. Based on this discussion, the jury finalizes the shortlist.
Applicants nominated for the shortlist are invited to present their findings at the MaP Graduate Symposium. The oral presentation contributes 20% to the final score.
During the symposium, the jury is present and again performs an independent evaluation of each shortlisted presentation. These evaluations are submitted to the MaP Doctoral School Coordinator, who compiles the results for a final discussion round. Following this final deliberation, the jury selects the winner.
All nominees on the shortlist receive an award. The winner of the MaP Award additionally obtains CHF 3000 prize money.
