2019 Raman Workshop

We have been delighted to organize the 4th ETH Raman Workshop – a 3-day workshop for junior researchers working in the field of Raman spectroscopy – which took place on 3-5 June 2019 at ETH Hönggerberg

Dear participants and invited speakers,

The 4th ETH Raman Workshop is now history. We are happy to have had over 100 participants and three Raman equipment producing companies registered for this year. Moreover, the fact that 14 excellent scientists accepted our invitation to present their research is something to be proud of. As always, our main goal was to create conditions for learning, open discussion, networking and exchange of ideas and we believe the workshop not only met your expectations but it was a valuable experience for you.

We would like to congratulate to 3 winner of Junior-talk competition and thank all of you once more for your participation and contributions, and specifically for your activity during the interactive session.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the 5th ETH Raman Workshop in 2020!

Best wishes,

The Organizing Team of the Raman Workshop 2019

The ETH Raman Workshop 2019 intended to continue the success of previous editions (2016, 2017 and 2018), fostering the network of active Raman researchers, both in Switzerland and abroad. The workshop, featuring top-profile scientists from all over the world, was aimed at providing further insights into the various techniques and applications of Raman spectroscopy in science and engineering. Bringing together researchers from different research fields and with different backgrounds strengthened collaborative research, facilitated the exchange of ideas and helped to find solutions for the persistent challenges of the science of today and tomorrow.

Keynote and Invited Talks (3-5 June 2019)

International experts in the specific fields of Raman spectroscopy honored the workshop with their presence:

  • Miguel Bañares (Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), ES)
  • Sarah Bohndiek (University of Cambridge, GB)
  • Andrea Ferrari (University of Cambridge, GB)
  • Jana Kalbacova (Horiba Scientific, D)
  • Tiziana Lombardo (Swiss National Museum, CH)
  • Admir Masic (Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA)
  • Motohiko Murakami (ETH Zurich, CH)
  • Lukas Novotny (ETH Zurich, CH)
  • Jürgen Popp (Friedrich Schiller University Jena, D)
  • Eric Reusser (ETH Zurich, CH)
  • Nuno Valente (F. Hoffmann-La Roche, CH)
  • Ilaria Zardo (University of Basel, CH)
  • Renato Zenobi (ETH Zurich, CH)
  • Andreas Zumbusch (University of Konstanz, D)

Instrument Demos (3 June 2019, afternoon)

Manufacturers of Raman instruments gave short presentations with practical demonstrations allowing participants to have a closer look at the latest developments in Raman spectroscopy instrumentation. They provided practical guidance and answers concerning measurement setups.

Interactive Session (4 June 2019, afternoon)

Each participant had the opportunity to present her/his research in a nutshell (max. 5 minutes) to a small audience of like-minded Raman researchers, with only the help of a whiteboard and markers. In this way, we communication barriers could be removed, enabling an easy and constructive exchange and feedback among researchers.

Junior Talks (3-5 June 2019)

Junior Raman researchers (PhD students or Postdocs) selected by the organising committee, based on the technical quality and scientific interest of their application, presented promising cutting-edge Raman projects.

  • Life science, soft and bio-materials
  • TERS, SERS
  • Carbon and other nanomaterials
  • Industrial applications of Raman
  • Catalysis, art conservation, forensics, geology and many more!
