Ethics and Scientific Integrity for Doctoral Students
We completed the third edition of the workshop Ethics and Scientific Integrity (Part 2) on 30 Juni 2023, with 19 participants from D-MATL, D-MAVT, D-HEST and D-BAUG. In a peer-learning format, different approaches to problem-solving in regards of ethics and scientific integrity were identified and trained, among others, through a role-play.
In this one-day programme filled with activities of interactive nature and lively discussions, doctoral students were guided by Sebastian Stepanow, Morgan Trassin and Alessandro Lauria from D-MATL, to recognise and analyse ethically-relevant situations in their scientific research. An appreciated role-play was part of the morning programme. The discussion about how it had played in the different groups continued during the joint lunch in Rice Up!. In the afternoon, all students got to pitch their research project and discussed the aspects of ethics and scientific integrity related to it with the other participants. The students had completed the on-line course upfront joining the workshop and were well prepared for the day of exchange with their peers.
The regulations on the doctorate at ETH specify that doctoral students must acquire at least 1 ECTS by attending a course on “Ethics & Good Scientific Practice”.
