The 5th seminar of the series, which took place on Tuesday, 14 February 2023, focused on Skin Mechanobiology. 29 people attended on site, nine more joined the seminar online.

Asia Badolato and Lorenza Garau Paganella jointly talked on the response of fibroblasts to secondary mechanical stresses. They presented their synthetic ECM platform to study the effect of osmotic and hydrostatic pressures in 3D environments, and how these stimulate biological pathways such as proliferation.

This was followed by Prof. Collin Ewald talking about the role of the Extra-Cellular matrix in longevity using the worm C. Elegans as a model organism. He showed that the amount of certain collagens correlates with worm longevity. Longevity could be prolonged by overexpressing collagen, or forcing muscle-to-matrix connection through hemidesmosomes.

To round off an inspiring session, participants mingled and exchanged about their research while enjoying snacks and drinks offered by MaP Doctoral School.
