Recap: ETH Zurich MaP Doctoral School Onboarding Event 2024

The MaP Doctoral School hosted its 2024 onboarding event at the Dozentenfoyer last Tuesday, 12 November. Around 60 doctoral students gathered to connect, exchange ideas, and enjoy Zurich’s iconic views over the city and lake. This year’s event focused entirely on building connections — true to the school's motto: “Connecting doctoral students.”

The evening opened with a welcome from school director Prof. Lucio Isa, who introduced track co-chairs Profs. Ingo Burgert, Ralph Spolenak, David Kammer, and André Studart and expressed gratitude to the MaP Executive Office team for their wonderful organisation.

With no formal presentations, students mingled freely, learning about the school and its various research tracks from posters around the room. To enhance the warm atmosphere, mulled wine and roasted chestnuts were served, adding a touch of seasonal charm to the evening. Each student left with a MaP Doctoral School lab book and a fun, Pokémon-inspired falcon tube holder, 3D printed by MaP student representative Yifan Cui.

It was an inspiring start to the doctoral journey, bringing the community together. Here’s to a doctorate full of collaboration and discovery!
